It is not surprising when tennis number one Roger Federer was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for the third year in a row in 2005, 2006 and now 2007. The 25-year-old Swiss now made another mark when he became the first sportsman to receive the award three times since it was granted in 2000 for the golfer Tiger Woods, who is second in the mark, winning the award twice in 2000 and 2001.
The panel of the Laureus World Sports Academy consisting of 42 members, took Federer for the top honor in a group of finalists that included world No. 1 Woods Golf and former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.
He was persistent for show constant domination of men's tennis in 2006 to win three Grand Slam titles with his victories in the Australia Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open.
Yelena Isinbayeva, Russia's record-breaking pole vaulter, won the Prize of the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year. Isinbayeva broke the world record 20th pole vault when he established a new indoor mark of 4.93 meters in February. He seemed pleased to receive recognition for their outstanding achievements after three Nominations for the award.
By Team of the Year award went to the Italian national football team to win the World Cup, this is the first time that Italy has won this award.
The discovery of the year was the tennis player Amélie Mauresmo, Serena Williams USA took the Comeback of the Year Award. Moreover, Spanish football giants Barcelona won the Spirit of Sport, and German legend Franz Beckenbauer won the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.
